Tenebrae—the name comes from the Latin word for ‘darkness’—is a way, by means of liturgical prayer, of tracing out progressively the struggle between the dark forces of sin and death that seem to overcome the Light of the World, Jesus Christ on the cross. The Tenebrae liturgy began in monastic communities in the Middle Ages. Our adaptation of Tenebrae is blended with the praying of Vespers.
