In September 2017, Pope Francis beatified Fr. Stanley Rother as a martyr. This was a historical moment for the Church in the United States since Fr. Rother is the first US-born priest to ever be beatified and also the first US-born person to be officially recognized as a martyr. What is most surprising, and encouraging, about Fr. Rother’s life and death is that he was an ordinary person in so many ways. His life and example gives us hope in our daily pursuit of holiness.
