volunteer opportunities

St. Joseph parishioners can participate by preparing a portion of the meal and optionally joining with others to serve and cleanup afterwards as well.
Individuals, couples and entire families all participate.

  • Signing up for a meal. Our coordinator’s goal is to give each household an equal opportunity to participate. You will be contacted within the month before the next meal to see if you can help.

  • Preparing food. The food served for the meal can be prepared in your home, in the Community Hall kitchen, or any other commercial kitchen. The Community Hall kitchen has a stove, an oven, and a microwave for preparing and heating food, and a refrigerator for storage.

  • Serving. We are responsible for setting out the food and serving it cafeteria style. And then we clean up after ourselves. Of course, serving is also the time when we interact with the people who come for the meal.

Note: Roughly 60 St. Joseph households are signed up for this program. Typically, 7-9 households prepare all the food for a given meal. Given that we serve 3-4 meals a month, this means that on average, any given household can expect to participate once every 1-2 months – however, if you would like to be involved more often, just let me know. Many school students have a community service obligation, and this program is an excellent way for them to contribute toward that goal.
